[...] A piece about former Buck Bruce Bowen and retiring numbers. I kid about the former Buck thing, but I’d like you to read this and keep it in mind for a week or so. I guarantee there is a reason behind my madness.
No edit button I could find...

I realize I excluded one or two people when compiling my personal list, so don't knock me for omitting Bill Sharman for example, but my general point still stands.

I guess it depends on the criteria you use to determine what should lead a player to have his number retired. I personally think that a number of the Celtics listed above have ridden the exploits of the championship teams from the 60s and had their contributions kicked up a notch because of that. With exceptions for situations like Reggie Lewis, (because of his death not his playing career), and Heinson (broadcasting in addition to a good player) I'd say the following player's acomplishments stack up with those of the players who had their numbers retired by the Lakers.

Russell, Cousey, Havlicek, Bird, Parish, Mchale, Sam Jones, Cowens.

I just don't think that being a piece of a championship team is enough to have a jersey in the rafters. Or being elected to the HOF (repeat 60s title point) or a x-time All-Star when there were 12 teams in the league.

Of the current Celtic team only Pierce has the chance to have his number retired. I don't think he should looking at the facts, but I'm sure he will as popular support will elevate him beyond the very good, but not great player he was/is. Take away the championship from a few years ago (in which he wasn't the best player and only slightly better than a number 3) and he has the same career as Vince Carter.
