Perk: A Double-Team Threat??

Here’s an interesting quote from Doc in the Herald’s story today about Perk’s increased role in the offense, something that has been a clear emphasis in the pre-season:

“He’s not going to get a lot of help (from extra defenders), and we tell him that. ‘If we get it down there to you, it’s not like anybody’s coming.’ Now, if he keeps scoring like this, eventually they will come, and that opens it up for someone else. That, to me, is where Perk has gotten so much better. Before when he caught it, it was like, I got this ball and I’m shooting it. (Friday) night he made a couple of great passes from out of there, too.

“It’s another good option for us.”

I got around to watching the Knicks pre-season game yesterday on DVR, and I was struck by how much more mobile Perk was in the offense. The C’s appear more willing to not only use him as a low post scorer but also as the screen/roll man on high screen/rolls—a job that demands quickness, good hands and scoring ability.

Imagine if Perk becomes enough of a threat to draw an occasional double team? Wow. Another weapon.
