The Red Sox are packing up their lockers, Tom Brady looks mortal and the Bruins appeared lost on the ice in the midst of their first five home games of the season. Sounds like it’s time to start giving your Boston Celtics some undivided attention.
On a day where Boston fans need some good news wherever they can find it, Frank Dell’apa of the Globe delivers this gem of a report from Celtics’ practice.
Kevin Garnett took another step forward in his recovery from knee surgery during Monday’s practice.
“He took a lob and dunked it — it was an amazing dunk,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said of Garnett. “Everybody said, ‘we haven’t seen that.’ “
Garnett went the distance in an hour-and-a-half practice, during which “we worked them hard,” Rivers said. Garnett has struggled to convert alley-oops during exhibition games. This time, though, he punctuated the shot by saying, “Oh, I can do it,” according to Rivers.
“I think Doc’s been waiting for me to grow wings and fly,” Garnett said. “Just tell him to be patient, the wings are coming.”
While I would love to see some video of this momentus occasion that doesn’t include KG limping up the court afterwards, if that report doesn’t get you excited about KG’s recovery, I don’t know what will. The pieces are slowly falling into place here people. If we continue getting reports like this out of Waltham, I think we are a few weeks away from witnessing the start of a very special season.
Rasheed’s goal of 73 regular season wins may be a little out of reach. Here is my question to you readers though. If KG makes a full recovery and this team remains healthy throughout this season, what is the ceiling for this team’s win total during the regular season? 60 wins? 65 wins? 70 wins?
It’s tough to say the word “seventy” while discussing regular season win totals. There are teams that can do it, but they won’t. Cleveland could have (should have) last year. Boston probably could have during the championship run two seasons ago. But Michael Jordan has no heir– not Kobe, not Lebron. Did you see his acceptance speech? He’s a nut. No one in sports right now has the same combination of limitless talent with limitless drive and attitude. That’s what you need for seventy.
But I hope Boston will prove me wrong!
Talking 70 wins is bad for us. I would take 60 wins and a championship anyday. I don’t care about 70. Let LeBron and Shaq get 70 and lose in the playoffs! Just be healthy and ready to go come playoff time!
68 wins. We got depth now. too bad we didn’t make moves before last year ….now I have to hear the Faker fans for another 9 months.
To Sean: I believe KG has a tall glass of intensity with his morning breakfast.
Ha ha, indeed he does; but I also believe MJ had an Egg McTalent alongside that glass.
