I thought rondo was worth between 8-10million per season depending on the insider info the team has on him. With the way he has played this season to this point it's hard to argue against 11million per. It's a little high with the economy as it is but in all honesty rondo will exceed the value of his contract soon. With a few more years of study and constant improvement he will be a top tier pg for years too come. A players value isn't allways measured by stats. Rondo does more than stats show he does. The celtics know this more than anyone. Had they waited he would have earned a 11-13million by seasons end. I think it was smart to ink him now and not risk paying more or loosing him.

There are a lot of dumb GMs out there right now, many of whom will have cap space at the end of the season. If Ainge had waited till the end of the season, I guarantee he would have been looking at matching a $13-13.5 mil/year contract. Rondo is definitely the type of player that would get overvalued. Better to save 2-2.5 million a year now than roll the dice

Absolutely. They didn't overpay him, they don't have to worry about him leaving next summer, and they don't have to worry about this being a distraction for him or the rest of the team. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who's going to be "signed and retired", so good move.

Definitely a good move. Celtics have a max of three years to bring in Championships with the big three (if Allen stays), and who else would be available at the end of the year? I'm biased as a Rondo fan, but he puts up triple doubles when they need him, too, along with running one of the sweetest looking offences in decades.

It was the right move. The C's have shown loyalty to a lot of players through the years. Why deny a young talent like Rondo that same show of loyalty. I'm glad for Rondo and the Celtics.

Not sure I like your use of "caved". Ainge reassessed the situation and realized that this was the right deal to make. If he "caved" it would involve him giving in to Rondo's demands against his wishes. What happened was he had a list of issues he wanted Rondo to address before he was ready to offer top money. Rondo did what he and Doc asked and then had a very solid start to the season. Ainge realized it was in the Celtics' best interest to make this deal. That's the reason he made it. Not because he was worried about "what ifs". Boston ownership wants to put the best team they can on the court. Isn't the extra $ worth increasing the odds they win another title? How much $ would title #18 be worth to the team? I guarantee it is multiples of the extra $10 mill they paid Rondo over their earlier offer. Now Rondo will be 100% focused and have to live up to the new contract. This only helps the team.

It was the right play, without a doubt. We weren't going to be saving any money waiting it out, Rondo would have gotten at LEAST an 11mil deal somewhere else, which we'd have matched, obviously. And chances are pretty damn good, it would have been higher than that.

Doing it the way they did, gets a fair deal for both sides, and it's sending a positive message to Rondo that we're putting faith in his hands to help carry this team forward, and that will go a long way for the confidence of a young point guard on his way up in the league.

Very pleased with how things turned out.
