You get the feeling he’d be a great guy to sit and talk with about the game for hours. Some lucky journalist should write a book at the NBA with Sheed when he retires. Here he is in the Globe today, discussing Allen Iverson and how basketball changes as you age:
“I’ve already accepted that I can’t jump no more,” he said. “I’m not as fast as I used to be. I accepted that already. That’s where you become more smart, make that first step or two before that first player could get there. Or I got make this jump shot; give him a little pump fake because he can jump higher than me. So to me, once you lose that step or two, that’s when you pick up a step or two with your head.”
“I can’t jump no more.” Awesome.
We’re all going to spend a lot of time wringing our hands over Sheed’s (permanent?) migration to the perimeter, how he doesn’t go to work on the low block as much anymore, etc. Maybe it’s relevant to ask: Is Sheed playing the only way his body can handle playing more than 100 games a season? What if he can’t get good shots off down low unless he has a favorable match-up? Or what if he can, but he has to conserve his energy and pick his spots?
No matter what, Sheed is certainly interesting. It’d be great fun to break down some film with him, wouldn’t it?
sheed has been an interesting player since he was on those portland teams that took both the original spurs and the lakers teams to the full extent. He’s so versatile but now he is settling. I hate to see him jack up threes like he has nothing better to do. Although if he goes 4/6 from threes i wont be complaining. It’s a tough situation to say the least but if he can exploit mismatches downlow i can be happy with him throwing them up. He won’t have too many 0fer nights. The suns game was the first suggestion to the problem that is sheed, but no matter what if we have a 7 foot pf/c coming off the bench and is one of the best man defender than hey what the hell?
He might not be able to jump like he used to (same with KG, you can see a miss), but you still can’t teach length
