This comes courtesy of Israel Gutierrez, a solid sports writer at the Miami Herald who has used up his powerful and valuable column space to do this:
Yes, it’s probably true that both James and Wade badly want to be the main man on their respective teams and be surrounded by complementary talent that wins them a championship.
But it’s also true that both James and Wade think big. They think about image. They think about legacy. They want to be great, and they want to be remembered for accomplishing great things.
If they team up and start collecting championship rings like trading cards, dominating the league for a decade and winning more titles than Michael Jordan ever did and possibly even reaching Bill Russell numbers, wouldn’t that be so much more memorable than winning a championship or two on their own?
I think that might be the record for projecting championships based on a free agency scenario that hasn’t happened (LeBron coming to Miami) and is unlikely to happen. They could pass MJ! They could approach the 11 titles Russell won! They could win more majors than Tiger Woods!
I read it as well this morning. I didn’t take this article in particular as speculating on what could happen should they play together, but rather their own reasoning for joining forces (ie in July 2010, “sorry cleveland, but I think I can win alot more with D-Wade than D-West”). I honestly think that the only reason Lebron will leave if he gets to play with one of his buddies on a better team too. Of course, there is already a sickening amount of speculation about next July, and we’re 1 week into the season. So you’re still right. Just sayin’…
This isn’t August. There are basketball games to discuss now. Give me a break! Gah! Damn you, Miami Herald.
