Daniels Out 6-8 Weeks

The Herald is just reporting that not only did Marquis Daniels have successful surgery repairing a torn ligament in his thumb (ouch and nagging), but he will also be out 6-8 weeks.

This means one thing:  Tony Allen will be called on.  A lot.

I guess it could also mean Doc will be playing mad scientist with the backup three position, making some sort of Frankenstein-esque monster out of Tony Allen, Brian Scalabrine, Glen Davis, J.R. Giddens, and Bill Walker.

The next 6-8 weeks should be a doozy.

On a related note, Glen Davis is set to return after Christmas, maybe (per the Boston Globe).  While Davis maintains that his return is just “soon” it’s been reported that the time table is really for just after Christmas.

I’ll have more on the pros and cons of all the potential back up threes later on.

Happy Snow Day Everyone!

    Terrible news for the 2nd unit. Terrible.

  2. Dan says:

    Why do we keep talking about Giddens like Doc is ever going to play him?

  3. Brendan Jackson says:

    @Dan
    because:
    A) he’s on the roster and a throw-in expiring contract as trade bait so not entirely essential to a trade
    B) If he couldn’t help this team in anyway, he would have been cut with Gabe Pruitt
    C) the bench is looking extremely thin and he is the only player, yes only player, with the prototypical small forward game

  4. Dan says:

    @brendan

    All that makes perfect sense except last night seemed like the perfect game to give him some minutes and Doc didn’t. Instead we got the Scal & TA one two punch.

    I am driving the “J.R. Giddens stinks” bandwagon. Hey may get some PT now, but unless he shows something he has never ever shown before, it’s all irrelevant in the scheme of things.

  6. Brendan Jackson says:

    I know he’s been bad, but Zach’s right, he will get playing time and as for last night, the game was just too close to put him in. Although I do believe he could D up Delfino and/ or Bell.

    JR was also worlds more athletic than any of his college counterparts, which was the biggest contributing factor to how high he was drafted. I think he needs his confidence back or he could be done after this season.

    I’ll take a chance on Giddens and Walker, get them some playing time, let’s see what happens. We all know Tony Allen is worthless, he’s proven it time and again, and it’s apparent he’s just not going to get better.

  8. Sophomore says:

    Hard to understand this. We know what we have in TA: a foul and turnover machine. We don’t know what we have in JR. I doubt he’s ever going to be a starter, but if he can just play solid D and not turn the ball over, we come out ahead.

    And now, if only Sheed could get himself into shape…

  9. Jared says:

    At the end of the day, Tony Allen can still play D. He may be an offensive woe, but at least you know hes not hurting you on both ends. Still, Giddens is young enough to get that college swagger back an be an offensive presence some day.

  10. JRatzloff says:

    We really need to get rid of Tony. I understand that he could possibly be valuable in a trade and all but we need someone else to fill in for Daniels these next 6-8 weeks. I desperately hope we bring Bill Walker into that spot, i’ve been dying to see him play, he seems like he could be the kinda guy we need right now. NOT TA

  11. dranen645 says:

    our bench is gradually gettin thinner and thinner, coming into the season that was in my opinion our biggest upside, now we are contemplating TA and giddens getting some serious playing time…I say if you are going to put scal as a three, which clearly doesn’t work for long stretches of time why not try BBD when he returns

    Here is something JR can do.

    MAKE A JUMPSHOT!

    Same with Bill Walker

  13. Brendan Jackson says:

    @Tom

    Has that been definitively proven yet?

    people need to stop hatin or jr giddens he 6-7 athletic can block shooters knows how to pass the ball and can score he is an upgrade from gerald green then u got bill walker with the time he got in the d league all he gotta do now is shoot better ta plays underrated defense only if he stop gettin injured dont sleep on giddens give him consecitive mins

  16. Tom says:

    Brendan,

    How many FGs outside of 15′ Giddens/Walker did they make? If I recall correctly, not many. Of course they don’t get a lot of playing time, but they are very suspect to me even when they do get playingtime.

    JR’s rebounding is overrated, the guy runs around like chicken without head. It’s not like Rondo where he knows where to be at the right times
