Update: Pierce in Serious Pain, KG to Play

The Associated Press has some details on Paul Pierce’s “injury” or “infection,” and it doesn’t sound good.

Money excerpt:

Pierce was in so much pain he called team trainer Ed Lacerte on Wednesday about 3 a.m., Rivers said. Lacerte went to Pierce’s house and took him to the hospital, where fluid was drained from the knee.

“What he’s going through is pretty significant,” Celtics guard Ray Allen said. “It is serious. Because me knowing Paul, he’s always practicing and he’s always playing, so for him not to be here, it must be very significant.”

Yikes. Ray said the word “significant” twice and “serious” once in that statement.

And KG is similarly unnerved, it seems:

“It’s unfortunate for Paul’s situation because it was kind of like a freak accident, or a freak situation,” Garnett said. “It’s really weird when you get the details of it.”

Hmm…”when you get the details of it.” What a teaser. What details? The ones about Pierce calling Ed Lacerte in the middle of the night? Or something else?

I am still waiting for more information about how exactly this sort of infection develops so suddenly, but it is Christmas Eve, and everyone is with their families.

Oh, and KG will play on Christmas, according to the Globe (via Red’s Army, which is cranking out the posts, I must say).

Keep those fingers and toes crossed for good Celtic health in 2010.

  2. Someone is not being totally honest as Globe’s C;s blog has a COMPLETELY different story:

@KWAPT: I wouldn’t read too much into it. The AP just says “he’s expected to miss at least two weeks” and doesn’t have any details about the injury itself that are contradictory to the Globe story. I think they just tacked on that “at least two weeks” line, honestly.

Well at least the Celtics don’t have a history of being less than honest with injuries to their players…. oh hi KG, how’s the knee doing?

I don’t think the Celtics have ever been dishonest about these injuries – in fact quite the opposite. KG’s knee injury isn’t so common, and they originally never anticipated how much time he would miss. When they did realize the severity, Doc announced he would be out for the entire playoffs, which no one believed, but he was telling the truth. Injuries can be unpredictable at times – you can’t expect the C’s to look into a crystal ball and tell you how things will turn out. Pierce may be back in 2 weeks, he may be back in 4 weeks if he runs into complications. That doesn’t make Doc and Danny Ainge liars.

The details ..ugh … this is what I was talking about earlier. The procedure may be minor, but the what’s the underlying cause? Is it some freak one-time thing like KG believes or is it something completely different and concerning?
