This play really puts a spotlight on Ray's ball-smarts.
Look at how after Sheed curls outside the arc he's not cutting to the basket, but instead pushing Demar towards Bargnani. He's giving Sheed the extra half a second he needs.
And once Bargnani gets past DeRozan and DeRozan turns his head towards the play Ray just keeps running, getting free. If Sheed gives up the shot, he can swing the ball around through Rondo and Ray's gonna be free for a pop at the other end.
such a smart player.

Also, If DeRozan and Bargs do switch, it means Sheed can either shoot over the much shorter DeRozan or keep the play going with both this mismatch (maybe an inside-out play to get Sheed to the post) and Bargnani chasing Ray towards the other side of the court.

I think the only answer defensively for the Raps would be to switch DeMar onto Sheed. It's not a great answer, but even if Barg decided to stick with Sheed to whole time, he'd still have to get around two players just to stay on him. Definitely a cool play. When the screener becomes the screen-e?

I agree, with schtevie, maybe not the BEST play. However, as always, Zach's analysis is sound and I think the more little 'wrinkles' added to the offense the better. I don't think Doc gets the credit he deserves as a coach and that's saying a lot because he does get decent praise.

It is always nice when the ball goes in, but I am not so sure how enamored of the play one should be. The shot did have a bit of pressure on it, Wallace averages a touch under 35% for eFG from that area, and it was taken just 4 seconds into the shot clock.

The best play, ex ante, or were there better options?

nice breakdown of a shifty little play. sheeds early inside buckets, and ray's (ever-present) cutting and hustle lubricated that play nicely.

any bets on how many 3s sheed jacks tonight? ;)
