Painful Reminders (Part I): The Celtics Drafted JaJuan Johnson Instead of Jimmy Butler

On June 23rd, 2011, Brian Robb and I stood around a high top bar table in Tommy Doyle’s in Kendall Square.  Before us lay one of the biggest mounds of buffalo chicken wings I had ever endeavor to make disappear.  These 25 cent flappers- one of the few indulgences afforded to the participants of our [...]

Chris Wilcox: 2012-13 Final Grade

There are a number of contextually-appropriate ways to craft this post. One would be to forgo words entirely, and represent Chris Wilcox’s entire season with a series of videos. That would involve one part of this: For every eight parts of this: Note the headline on that second clip. Someone was so amused/enraged by Wilcox’s [...]

Rajon Rondo’s 2012-13 Final Grade

Here’s a sweeping general statement involving super specific statistics that may or may not mean anything: In the 1423 minutes Rajon Rondo played this season, the Boston Celtics were outscored by 1.3 points per 100 possessions. When he sat (including all contests after he tore his ACL), Boston was better than their opponents by 1.8 [...]

Avery Bradley Elected to NBA All-Defense Second Team

Avery Bradley has been a standout defender for the past couple seasons…in the regular season anyway. Now he has a trophy to prove it. The NBA announced this afternoon that the third-year guard has been elected by coaches around the league to the second-team all-NBA defensive team for the first time in his career. Bradley [...]

Paul Pierce’s Contract: Dispelling The Myths and Stating The Facts

The first domino to fall this offseason is Paul Pierce’s contract. Until Danny Ainge figures out what he’s doing there, little else matters. As we wait for this decision, we also must face the rest of the offseason, which means it is also rumor season. With that time of year, comes plenty of information floating [...]

Final Grade: Avery Bradley (C+)

In his third year in the league, in which promising players often make brash leaps from benchwarmer to starter, from starter to star, Avery Bradley took a big step back. But his regression might be deceptive. When he returned to the Celtics’ lineup on January the 2nd after two in-season months recovering from offseason shoulder [...]

What SEGABABA? Celtics 100, Raptors 64

Toronto Raptors 64 Final
Recap | Box Score
100 Boston Celtics

Kevin Garnett, PF 17 MIN | 3-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 4 AST | 7 PTS | +13

Doc gets a A+ for only having Garnett play 16 minutes!

Paul Pierce, SF 26 MIN | 5-11 FG | 3-4 FT | 6 REB | 8 AST | 17 PTS | +28

Only one turnover! Pierce played loose in the second half when there were three straight possessions of him going one-on-one. Obviously the game wasn’t in doubt but there’s not really a point of being on the court if you’re not going to run something.

Jermaine O’Neal, C 14 MIN | 3-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 6 PTS | +8

O’Neal was in foul trouble for most of the game so luckily the C’s didn’t need him too badly. When he was in, he played great defense and took a few charges. Pretty much what you hope to get out of JO.

Ray Allen, SG 23 MIN | 5-9 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 5 AST | 12 PTS | +23

Allen was feeling it from deep but didn’t play enough minutes to get above a B+.

Avery Bradley, SG 26 MIN | 5-6 FG | 1-1 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 11 PTS | +27

Applied great pressure all night and showed more in the way offense than Celtics fans have seen. Bradley had a great off the dribble pull up jumper and a fantastic drive to the basket in the first half. Outscored Kevin Garnett.

Chris Wilcox, PF 18 MIN | 0-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 0 PTS | +13

Only 5 boards in 15 minutes but the +15 wasn’t an accident. I’d like to see him be more assertive on the offensive end.

Marquis Daniels, SG 5 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 2 PTS | +6

Garbage time/mop up duty. Incomplete.

Sasha Pavlovic, SF 21 MIN | 2-7 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 6 PTS | +4

After playing really well in the first half, Pavlovic tried to play more aggressive and ended up getting his pocket picked by Barbosa more than he should have.

Mickael Pietrus, SF 21 MIN | 2-7 FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 6 PTS | +11

Pietrus was extremely nonchalant tonight. He took 6 threes and many of them of the step back variety. He redeemed himself in the second half by playing solid defense and hitting the glass but I would like to see a little more seriousness on the court in more pressure-filled situations.

Brandon Bass, PF 31 MIN | 4-8 FG | 4-4 FT | 9 REB | 2 AST | 12 PTS | +24

Hard to ask for more than a near double-double from the sixth man and backup power forward. Outscored Kevin Garnett.

Greg Stiemsma, C 7 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 2 PTS | +2

In his first two minutes he allowed two left handed drives straight to the basket by Leandro Barbosa. He was then immediately replaced by JaJuan Johnson. He came back in for Bass and redeemed himself a little with a jumper but he should be making the most of the time he gets if he hopes to stick around.

JaJuan Johnson, F 10 MIN | 5-5 FG | 1-2 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 11 PTS | +12

11 points in 10 garbage time minutes. Outscored Kevin Garnett.

E’Twaun Moore, G 22 MIN | 3-8 FG | 1-1 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 8 PTS | +9

In perhaps Moore’s biggest game in terms of trust and role, he played pretty well controlling the offense. A few end of the shot clock moments of indecision took him down a few notches but overall a good step in the right direction.

Three Things We Saw

  1. The Toronto Raptors are a bad basketball team.
  2. The Celtics did not fall victim to the curse of the SEGABABA. But, their starters didn’t really play enough minutes to have this actually be a SEGABABA.
  3. The Toronto Raptors are a really bad basketball team.
