Painful Reminders (Part I): The Celtics Drafted JaJuan Johnson Instead of Jimmy Butler

On June 23rd, 2011, Brian Robb and I stood around a high top bar table in Tommy Doyle’s in Kendall Square.  Before us lay one of the biggest mounds of buffalo chicken wings I had ever endeavor to make disappear.  These 25 cent flappers- one of the few indulgences afforded to the participants of our [...]

Chris Wilcox: 2012-13 Final Grade

There are a number of contextually-appropriate ways to craft this post. One would be to forgo words entirely, and represent Chris Wilcox’s entire season with a series of videos. That would involve one part of this: For every eight parts of this: Note the headline on that second clip. Someone was so amused/enraged by Wilcox’s [...]

Rajon Rondo’s 2012-13 Final Grade

Here’s a sweeping general statement involving super specific statistics that may or may not mean anything: In the 1423 minutes Rajon Rondo played this season, the Boston Celtics were outscored by 1.3 points per 100 possessions. When he sat (including all contests after he tore his ACL), Boston was better than their opponents by 1.8 [...]

Avery Bradley Elected to NBA All-Defense Second Team

Avery Bradley has been a standout defender for the past couple seasons…in the regular season anyway. Now he has a trophy to prove it. The NBA announced this afternoon that the third-year guard has been elected by coaches around the league to the second-team all-NBA defensive team for the first time in his career. Bradley [...]

Paul Pierce’s Contract: Dispelling The Myths and Stating The Facts

The first domino to fall this offseason is Paul Pierce’s contract. Until Danny Ainge figures out what he’s doing there, little else matters. As we wait for this decision, we also must face the rest of the offseason, which means it is also rumor season. With that time of year, comes plenty of information floating [...]

Final Grade: Avery Bradley (C+)

In his third year in the league, in which promising players often make brash leaps from benchwarmer to starter, from starter to star, Avery Bradley took a big step back. But his regression might be deceptive. When he returned to the Celtics’ lineup on January the 2nd after two in-season months recovering from offseason shoulder [...]

Leftover Thoughts on the Wizards Win

Boston Celtics 89 FinalRecap | Box Score 86 Washington Wizards
Kevin Garnett, PF 29 MIN | 7-15 FG | 1-2 FT | 7 REB | 2 AST | 15 PTS | +10Maximizing the Big Ticket’s minutes on the offensive end will be one of the team’s biggest challenges this season, but against an inept defensive opponent in Washington, they got back to basics. The pick and pop was alive and well with KG, whose jump shot was back in peak form. He was fed early and often because of it. 15 shots in 29 minutes is asking a lot of the big man, but until the team’s new offensive weapons show some life, heavy usage of KG within the offense is the best plan for the time being. Defensively he’s rebounding like an animal (30% defensive rebounding rate) so nothing to complain about there.
Jared Sullinger, PF 30 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 4 PTS | +7Overall, not a line that would catch your eye, but with the Sullinger + bench unit providing lackluster results over the first two contests, Doc wisely decided to mix it up. It’s safe to say the rookie probably earned another starting nod in the rematch with the Wiz on Wednesday night after the team jumped out to a 19-2 lead with him in the fold as a starter. While Washington missed all of their shots early on, there were no second chances for the Wizards in large part due to Sullinger’s work on the glass. Hiding his defense with KG on the floor also did wonders for him.
Paul Pierce, SF 35 MIN | 10-22 FG | 3-4 FT | 7 REB | 3 AST | 27 PTS | +15A true rhythm player showed just how much of a effect sufficient playing time can have on him. After being saddled with foul trouble for the first half against Milwaukee, he was unable to find the hoop until the fourth quarter in that blowout loss. Last night, it was a different story as PP was aggressive with his shot and on the glass and it paid dividends. Refreshing to see the captain still capable of putting together efficient lines like this when the offense is overly dependent on him.
Rajon Rondo, PG 40 MIN | 5-10 FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 12 AST | 12 PTS | +15Despite all of the double-doubles, I’m still underwhelmed by the C’s point guard through three games. The defense was much better for portions of last night, but we are still not seeing an aggressive Rondo on the offensive end. Too many passed up layups that are dished out of the paint for my liking. It’s one thing when those jumpers are falling, but when your teammates are bricking them it’s a tough sell. 2 turnovers in 40 minutes is a very nice improvement however.
Courtney Lee, SG 29 MIN | 2-7 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 4 PTS | +10A lot of open looks from 3-point range and nothing to show for it.
Jeff Green, PF 16 MIN | 5-10 FG | 0-2 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 11 PTS | -5This grade feels harsh, but it’s mostly accounting for Green’s performance on the defensive end. As Ryan DeGama put it, if Green is only playing 16 minutes already on the second night of back-to-back, it could be a long season for him. It’s three games in, far too early to jump to conclusions, but the rebounding and defense has to get better for Doc to trust him out there when it counts.
Chris Wilcox, PF 8 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 PTS | -5Did Darko play himself out of the rotation already? If Chris Wilcox is on the floor for 8 minutes, but has nothing to show for it, is that a good thing? I guess no missed shots, as compared to a air-ball hook shots that Darko threw up Friday night is a net positive.
Brandon Bass, PF 28 MIN | 2-6 FG | 1-1 FT | 5 REB | 2 AST | 5 PTS | -8The jump shot wasn’t on, and Kevin Seraphin took him to task for a portion of the evening on the defensive end. Check out that assist count though! No pass who?
Jason Terry, SG 17 MIN | 2-8 FG | 4-4 FT | 0 REB | 3 AST | 8 PTS | -12As Hayes wrote last week, this is going to take awhile to figure out. I’m also praying we don’t have to dig into the CelticsHub archives for Zach’s analysis of shooting guards’ numbers that fall off a cliff at age 35. Let’s revisit that after Game 15.
Leandro Barbosa, SG 8 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 3 PTS | -12Fewer three’s, more attacking the basket please.
