Jason Terry’s 2012-13 Final Grade

Acquiring any player, whether it’s via trade, free agency, or the draft, comes with an air of uncertainty. The NBA has no guaranteed covenant and all sales are final, no matter how talented, proven, or productive the player may have been in year’s past. But these memories—especially recent ones—often clouds the judgment of a [...]

Painful Reminders (Part I): The Celtics Drafted JaJuan Johnson Instead of Jimmy Butler

On June 23rd, 2011, Brian Robb and I stood around a high top bar table in Tommy Doyle’s in Kendall Square.  Before us lay one of the biggest mounds of buffalo chicken wings I had ever endeavor to make disappear.  These 25 cent flappers- one of the few indulgences afforded to the participants of our [...]

Chris Wilcox: 2012-13 Final Grade

There are a number of contextually-appropriate ways to craft this post. One would be to forgo words entirely, and represent Chris Wilcox’s entire season with a series of videos. That would involve one part of this: For every eight parts of this: Note the headline on that second clip. Someone was so amused/enraged by Wilcox’s [...]

Rajon Rondo’s 2012-13 Final Grade

Here’s a sweeping general statement involving super specific statistics that may or may not mean anything: In the 1423 minutes Rajon Rondo played this season, the Boston Celtics were outscored by 1.3 points per 100 possessions. When he sat (including all contests after he tore his ACL), Boston was better than their opponents by 1.8 [...]

Avery Bradley Elected to NBA All-Defense Second Team

Avery Bradley has been a standout defender for the past couple seasons…in the regular season anyway. Now he has a trophy to prove it. The NBA announced this afternoon that the third-year guard has been elected by coaches around the league to the second-team all-NBA defensive team for the first time in his career. Bradley [...]

Paul Pierce’s Contract: Dispelling The Myths and Stating The Facts

The first domino to fall this offseason is Paul Pierce’s contract. Until Danny Ainge figures out what he’s doing there, little else matters. As we wait for this decision, we also must face the rest of the offseason, which means it is also rumor season. With that time of year, comes plenty of information floating [...]

Celtics-Nets Grades

Boston Celtics 97 FinalRecap | Box Score 102 Brooklyn Nets
Kevin Garnett, PF 30 MIN | 6-12 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 14 PTS | -12Did an admirable job providing some offense in the first half of the fourth quarter, before C’s went cold from the field. Played the entire fourth quarter again after just 18 minutes over the first 3. Like the minutes management by Doc, but do wonder if KG’s tired legs are coming back to burn Boston late.
Brandon Bass, PF 30 MIN | 4-14 FG | 0-1 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 8 PTS | -23The mid-range jumper vanished when the C’s needed it most late in the game. Like the rest of his teammates, did a nice job bouncing back on the defensive glass after a atrocious first half.
Paul Pierce, SF 34 MIN | 8-12 FG | 4-6 FT | 7 REB | 4 AST | 22 PTS | +2Not going to let two missed free throws and a questionable dumb foul (you can make case, fouling wasn’t the worst move there) destroy his grade too much. Showed off some impressive moves from mid-range to get Boston back into the game in the fourth quarter and did a strong job containing Joe Johnson for the majority of the night.
Jason Terry, SG 28 MIN | 3-7 FG | 2-4 FT | 4 REB | 6 AST | 10 PTS | +3Wasn’t able to bail out the C’s with his offense late, like he did in the Chicago win Monday night. Anytime you get four rebounds and six assists from the veteran guard, you can’t be too disappointed.
Leandro Barbosa, SG 30 MIN | 5-11 FG | 6-6 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 17 PTS | -8Some ineffective defense in the first half was his only real downfall here, as he filled in quite admirably for Rajon Rondo for the second straight night. The offense dried up when he hit the bench for the majority of the fourth quarter, which makes you wonder if Doc should have turned back to Mr. Instant offense a little sooner, after the Nets struggled to contain him all night going to the basket.
Jeff Green, PF 25 MIN | 2-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 1 AST | 5 PTS | +1A step back on the offensive end, but a strong effort on the glass helped a ton in the second half. His ability to continue contributing in other facets of the game when his shots isn’t going will be huge for this team going forever.
Jared Sullinger, PF 8 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 PTS | 0No real impact here. Watching him try to fight Reggie Evans for position on the glass was entertaining.
Chris Wilcox, PF 13 MIN | 2-2 FG | 2-2 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 6 PTS | +16Couldn’t real find a way to contain Brook Lopez who ran a layup and rebounding drill on him for much of the first half. Still, he maximized his minutes on the offensive end
Jason Collins, C 8 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 2 PTS | -1Oh Darko, when you have fallen behind Jason Collins in the rotation, you know it’s trouble. Beyond a missed layup, Jason didn’t do anything to embarrass himself here. It would be nice if he could rebound a little more, but he helped stabilize the defense in the second quarter with KG resting.
Courtney Lee, SG 33 MIN | 4-8 FG | 4-4 FT | 9 REB | 3 AST | 13 PTS | -3Now this is the guy we have been looking for all season. The three-guard rotation with Rondo sidelined probably helped Lee find his rhythm, but he was everywhere for the C’s on both ends, especially in the second half and finished with a team-high nine rebounds. Three assists, and three steals as well and a nice job shutting down Deron Williams in the second half. Sign me up for more!
