Painful Reminders (Part I): The Celtics Drafted JaJuan Johnson Instead of Jimmy Butler

On June 23rd, 2011, Brian Robb and I stood around a high top bar table in Tommy Doyle’s in Kendall Square.  Before us lay one of the biggest mounds of buffalo chicken wings I had ever endeavor to make disappear.  These 25 cent flappers- one of the few indulgences afforded to the participants of our [...]

Chris Wilcox: 2012-13 Final Grade

There are a number of contextually-appropriate ways to craft this post. One would be to forgo words entirely, and represent Chris Wilcox’s entire season with a series of videos. That would involve one part of this: For every eight parts of this: Note the headline on that second clip. Someone was so amused/enraged by Wilcox’s [...]

Rajon Rondo’s 2012-13 Final Grade

Here’s a sweeping general statement involving super specific statistics that may or may not mean anything: In the 1423 minutes Rajon Rondo played this season, the Boston Celtics were outscored by 1.3 points per 100 possessions. When he sat (including all contests after he tore his ACL), Boston was better than their opponents by 1.8 [...]

Avery Bradley Elected to NBA All-Defense Second Team

Avery Bradley has been a standout defender for the past couple seasons…in the regular season anyway. Now he has a trophy to prove it. The NBA announced this afternoon that the third-year guard has been elected by coaches around the league to the second-team all-NBA defensive team for the first time in his career. Bradley [...]

Paul Pierce’s Contract: Dispelling The Myths and Stating The Facts

The first domino to fall this offseason is Paul Pierce’s contract. Until Danny Ainge figures out what he’s doing there, little else matters. As we wait for this decision, we also must face the rest of the offseason, which means it is also rumor season. With that time of year, comes plenty of information floating [...]

Final Grade: Avery Bradley (C+)

In his third year in the league, in which promising players often make brash leaps from benchwarmer to starter, from starter to star, Avery Bradley took a big step back. But his regression might be deceptive. When he returned to the Celtics’ lineup on January the 2nd after two in-season months recovering from offseason shoulder [...]

Celtics-Bobcats Grades

Charlotte Bobcats 89 FinalRecap | Box Score 100 Boston Celtics
Kevin Garnett, PF 32 MIN | 2-11 FG | 3-4 FT | 10 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 7 PTS | -5
Garnett had an ugly shooting night highlighted by a heinously bad miss on a layup. He still defended well and was aggressive on the boards but also over-reacted badly on Gerald Henderson’s flagrant foul call. I wish Garnett respected players who doled out hard fouls, like he does. Unfortunately, Garnett doesn’t respect anyone during the game. Whatever gets him going, I s’pose.
Brandon Bass, PF 17 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 2 TO | 6 PTS | +4
Bass is becoming more and more of a bit player, and I love it. He is absolutely perfect for this team when he is on. He hits open jumpers and makes good, strong defensive rotations and close-outs. It’s hard to ask any more from him.
Paul Pierce, SF 32 MIN | 6-16 FG | 5-8 FT | 4 REB | 6 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 19 PTS | +13
Pierce’s offense hit a bit of a snag when he started missing every time he touched the ball. He, however, bounced back nicely with a lead-stretching three in the fourth quarter. It certainly wasn’t Pierce’s best overall game, but I liked the way he was assertive against Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, likely teaching him NBA-life-lessons on his way to the basket.
Rajon Rondo, PG 37 MIN | 8-11 FG | 1-1 FT | 10 REB | 12 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 17 PTS | +11
Rondo had a few head-scratching assists tonight. Not because of questionable decision-making, but because after the ball was scored you were still left wondering how it got to the man who scored. Rondo was also aggressive on the boards. This team has a tendency to not fully secure rebounds and Rondo, when motivated, cleans up the glass nicely. I had to take points off of Rondo’s grade for the times in which he Ole’d on defense and didn’t care to close out on shooters.
Avery Bradley, PG 28 MIN | 6-10 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 2 TO | 16 PTS | +15
Bradley continues to show no sign of slowing down. He began the game by pestering Kemba Walker and finished the game lighting it up from the corners. As I described in the previous post, Bradley could have, at worst, a 15 year career by just being a 3 and D guy.
Jared Sullinger, PF 22 MIN | 4-4 FG | 0-2 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 8 PTS | +4
His standards are starting to rise, which is both unfortunate and fortunate for him. Unfortunate because his CelticsHub grades suffer when he puts up 8 and 5. Fortunate because he’s settling nicely into his role and playing within himself and the team. I think (note: not confirmed) that he would rather have the win than the good grades if given the choice.
Jeff Green, PF 27 MIN | 4-8 FG | 2-2 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 11 PTS | +8
This may have been Jeff Green’s best game, and I say that full well knowing that he’s scored more and and dunked harder in previous games. Tonight may have been the first game where he didn’t look tentative when handling the ball on the perimeter and shot every outside jumper with confidence. This could have been due in large part to the opponent but only time will really tell.
Jason Collins, C 8 MIN | 1-2 FG | 1-1 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 3 PTS | +8
I love Jason Collins in games like these. He plays hard and the opponent is bad enough that he doesn’t get the chance to have an impact on the game.
Courtney Lee, SG 17 MIN | 4-7 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 9 PTS | +3
I loved Lee’s ball pressure tonight. He seems to be feeding off of Bradley’s defensive energy and he seems to be enjoying his time as Rondo’s primary backup.
Jason Terry, SG 15 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 0 PTS | -8
Sure, Terry didn’t score, but he still played hard. That definitely counts for something on this team and in this league.
Leandro Barbosa, SG 5 MIN | 1-2 FG | 2-2 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 4 PTS | +2
How about that scoop shot from the elbow! Huh?!
Doc Rivers
Doc Rivers did a good job of calming his players down and getting them to re-focus after the Bobcats made a little run in the 3rd quarter and cut it to two.
