Painful Reminders (Part I): The Celtics Drafted JaJuan Johnson Instead of Jimmy Butler

On June 23rd, 2011, Brian Robb and I stood around a high top bar table in Tommy Doyle’s in Kendall Square.  Before us lay one of the biggest mounds of buffalo chicken wings I had ever endeavor to make disappear.  These 25 cent flappers- one of the few indulgences afforded to the participants of our [...]

Chris Wilcox: 2012-13 Final Grade

There are a number of contextually-appropriate ways to craft this post. One would be to forgo words entirely, and represent Chris Wilcox’s entire season with a series of videos. That would involve one part of this: For every eight parts of this: Note the headline on that second clip. Someone was so amused/enraged by Wilcox’s [...]

Rajon Rondo’s 2012-13 Final Grade

Here’s a sweeping general statement involving super specific statistics that may or may not mean anything: In the 1423 minutes Rajon Rondo played this season, the Boston Celtics were outscored by 1.3 points per 100 possessions. When he sat (including all contests after he tore his ACL), Boston was better than their opponents by 1.8 [...]

Avery Bradley Elected to NBA All-Defense Second Team

Avery Bradley has been a standout defender for the past couple seasons…in the regular season anyway. Now he has a trophy to prove it. The NBA announced this afternoon that the third-year guard has been elected by coaches around the league to the second-team all-NBA defensive team for the first time in his career. Bradley [...]

Paul Pierce’s Contract: Dispelling The Myths and Stating The Facts

The first domino to fall this offseason is Paul Pierce’s contract. Until Danny Ainge figures out what he’s doing there, little else matters. As we wait for this decision, we also must face the rest of the offseason, which means it is also rumor season. With that time of year, comes plenty of information floating [...]

Final Grade: Avery Bradley (C+)

In his third year in the league, in which promising players often make brash leaps from benchwarmer to starter, from starter to star, Avery Bradley took a big step back. But his regression might be deceptive. When he returned to the Celtics’ lineup on January the 2nd after two in-season months recovering from offseason shoulder [...]

Celtics-Bobcats Grades

Boston Celtics 74 FinalRecap | Box Score 100 Charlotte Bobcats
Jeff Green, PF 30 MIN | 4-11 FG | 6-8 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 14 PTS | -17
Inefficient offense, no rebounding and some pretty ugly defense as well. We’re reverting back to the first half of the season Jeff Green and I don’t think anyone wants to go back there.
Brandon Bass, PF 24 MIN | 4-6 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | -8
One of the only guys who actually showed up tonight. He continues to rebound well and is hitting shots on offense, but somehow only got six shots on a night without Pierce on the floor. If C’s are going to continue to rely on the mid-range, this is the guy I want taking those shots.
Kevin Garnett, C 21 MIN | 2-10 FG | 1-2 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 5 PTS | -16
I can’t give KG an F. I just can’t do it, even though he probably deserves it for this game. He’s tired, even if Doc says he’s not. Look for him to rest one of the next two games before Miami comes to town. This team needs to get him right again after a couple stinkers.
Avery Bradley, PG 28 MIN | 4-11 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 10 PTS | -10
The corner 3′s were nice, but very little of the rest of his game was productive.
Courtney Lee, SG 29 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 4 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 6 PTS | -21
Got into foul trouble, which helped allow Gerald Henderson to take off. Missed plenty of open 3-balls. Lackluster.
Shavlik Randolph, PF 18 MIN | 2-4 FG | 0-2 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 4 PTS | -7
I want to see some footage of him scoring 32 points per game in China. I just don’t believe it’s possible. Refs screwed him over a couple of times on calls, but by and large he’s not quick enough defensively to help this team.
D.J. White, PF 16 MIN | 1-4 FG | 1-2 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 3 PTS | -8
So much for showing a spark against your former team.
Chris Wilcox, PF 10 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -1
Fouled a lot, Doc didn’t go back to him in the second half. After a terrific couple weeks, it’s been a bad couple games for CW.
Jordan Crawford, SG 28 MIN | 4-6 FG | 5-5 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 14 PTS | -21
Had a nice second quarter which helped keep the C’s in the game. Doc probably should have gone to him earlier in the third quarter when the C’s couldn’t buy a bucket, but it was too late by that point probably anyway. Still fouls too much on defens.e
Terrence Williams, SG 14 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-2 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 3 PTS | -11
Now I know why the Rockets and Nets gave up on him.
Jason Terry, SG 24 MIN | 2-5 FG | 1-2 FT | 1 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 5 PTS | -10
Terry’s been bad on the road all year, but this is exactly the kind of game Boston can’t afford him to lay an offensive egg in. If he can’t create his own shot against the Bobcats, who can he against?
Paul Pierce, SF DNP COACH’S DECISION MIN | FG | FT | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO | PTS |
If you ever questioned how important Pierce was to just about everything this team does, watch tonight’s game. I fear the post-Pierce era in Boston. It won’t be pretty.
Doc Rivers
At least he was smart enough to rest Paul.

One Thing We Saw

  1. This was brutal, but let’s keep it in perspective. The Celtics played nine of their last 11 on the road, and somehow managed to go 6-5 through that stretch. If they lose against the Raptors Wednesday night it’s time to worry, but the C’s haven’t had a stinker in about 20 games now. They were due. Unfortunately, it came against the Bobcats.
